August Meeting

August 21st, 2008, 10:00am

We should have an interesting meeting this month in a different and quite beautiful setting – the Conservation Education Reserve at Rogers State University. We will begin at 10:00am as usual. You may find space to park at park at 27 Aquatics Lab or ,more likely, a little further on at 28 Barn.

NE Master Naturalists will tour the Rogers State University Conservation Education Reserve and learn about the history and features of the reserve.

The Rogers State University Conservation Education Reserve is located on the campus of Rogers State University in Claremore, Oklahoma. It is a 120 acre outdoor classroom for students of all ages, to use as a living textbook, to learn the value of conserving our natural resources. Bottomland hardwood, tall-grass prairie and cross timber habitats grace the slopes and lowlands. Students and teachers learn at the Reserve with a hands on approach.

POINTS OF INTEREST AT THE RESERVE

· BUTTERFLY GARDEN

· HERB GARDEN

· WETLAND BOARDWALK

· WILDLIFE VIEWING AREA

· FISHING POND

· HARDWOOD TRAIL

· TALL GRASS PRAIRIE TRAIL

· THE GREENHOUSE

Any interested Master Naturalists will also have the opportunity to stay afterwards and create plaster casts of animal tracks to be given away to children attending the 2008 Wildlife Expo. They will need thousands of these and anyone who is interested in completing a few volunteer hours will have a great time with this crafty opportunity.

Directions to the Aquatics lab at the Reserve…….

The Conservation Education Reserve is operated and managed by the Rogers County Conservation District. The Reserve is located on the Rogers State University Campus in Claremore, Oklahoma. The address to Rogers State University is 1701 W. Will Rogers Blvd. Claremore, Oklahoma. The map below will direct you to the RSU campus. To get to the Reserve you will follow University Blvd. through the campus until you get to Col. Horne Drive. It will be on your right. After you turn onto Col. Horne Drive you will take the split to the left which goes down hill and turns into asphalt. You will follow this road through the Reserve to the Aquatics lab. If you get lost or need further directions, please call Barb at 918-260-8876.
